Critical Reflection Essay
This is guide only to assist students
There is flexibility surrounding this – the concept map is to assist
students in collating their thought process before undergoing the
critically reflective process
Start to think about what has resonated with you in this course –
is there something that stood out; is there something that you did
not quite understand or agree with and would like to explore this
further; were there discussions in class or with family and/or
peers that stood out
Getting started
• CULTURAL SELF – A crucial part of being culturally safe, is
being able to define our own culture
• REFLECTION is looking back on an experience or a
situation with the intention of drawing insight that may
inform future practice in positive ways
• CRITICAL REFLECTION is a guided process to aid analysis
and increase the potential for transforming practice to
achieve positive outcomes
Critical reflection steps include questioning, defining,
reflection, analysis & learning
• SELF-REFLEXIVITY is having an ongoing conversation with
your whole self about what you are experiencing as you
are experiencing it to improve relationships at the time
Understanding Reflection
• Critically reflecting on an experience, situation or
performance allows for deeper learning, insight and
conscious decision marking to improve and transform
professional practice (Walker, Schultz & Sonn, 2014)
• It allows for the opportunity to look at topic from a number
of perspectives including those that have contributed and
shaped our own worldview thus our understanding of the
topic
• It creates a platform or space where we can then
interrogate and challenge our own assumptions and that of
others and draw on literature in order to examine any pre
conceived assumptions or underlying biases or prejudice’s
Why are you asked to critically reflect
• Prejudice
• Bias
• Assumptions
• Stereotype
• Ethnocentric
• Preference for what we understand or are familiar with
influences perceptions, assumptions and attitudes (Bass,
2016)
Why ask what is our cultural self or worldview of
this topic?

Create a detailed concept map that identifies the key concepts of
one subject that has resonated with you in the First Peoples Health
and Practice course (3121MED).
To assist you, you should ask yourself:
• What has resonated with me the most in this course? (subject)
• When I think of this, what things come to mind?(concepts)
• How did this make me feel and how did I react when I heard
this?
• Why did I feel or react this way?
• What influences have shaped my understanding or worldview of
this?
• Has my professional culture influenced or impacted on my
understanding or perception of this? If so, how? If not, why
not?

unpacking all of your concepts

• Consider asking yourself why this is or why was I reluctant to
engage in the content?
• Consider asking why is it important in my profession to have
cultural safety?
• Consider what do I know about First Peoples and where did
this come from?
• Consider asking does my understanding, perception or view
of First People actually influence how I practice healthcare?
• Consider asking why do young First People experience the
affects of what they have not had to endure?
• What are causes of the gap in life expectancy that we see
today?
• Please also arrange a consultation with your Campus
Convenor well before the due date to you can be supported
in completing the task
Then put the answer to this question in the middle of your
concept map and start from there.
What if nothing in the course has
stood out or resonated with me?

• Submit at the beginning of your essay.
• The concept map is worth 5 marks
• It will help plan your critical reflection essay so we strongly
encourage you to do this first to plan your essay
• Words are not included in the overall word count

• You can develop it electronically
• As long as the marker can read it and clearly see your
questioning
• Ensure that you are submitted this as ONE document with your
essay via Turn It In
• References are not needed
• You will be marked on the depth of questioning not your
viewpoints
Submitting your concept map
From your concept map, what do you want to know more about?
What is intergenerational trauma and how does this manifest in the
healthcare system?
Does White Privilege exist and/or do we see it in the Australian healthcare
system?
Is the Australian Healthcare system racist?
Why was I never taught about this content until now and what impacts has
this then had?
Where do the stereotypes of First People come from and what are the
causes and effects of these?
Why is it that I just can’t treat everyone the same?
Why do I only hear of First Peoples through a deficit discourse and what
impact does this have on health?
How does history keep impacting on First Peoples health?
