Determining the Scope of Your Research
Step 1: Use key words related to your topic and find 5-7 sources (you may need to look through more). Establish the gap in the research in the field of your topic. Once you’re happy with the sources, make a list of references and include on the last page of the assignment you submit.
Step 2: Diagram your field of research explaining how or where you find your topic of interest in it. This should attempt to clarify where you see the gap in the research and help identify your contribution.
It is expected that you are relatively new to your topic. You have an interest in it and you are beginning to understand and search for its relevance in business, finance, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc. Several questions you can address when diagramming the scope are:
What is the general area of the study?
What are the sources of your research topic?
What is the field of research around it?
What is the gap in existing literature that you have reviewed so far?
Where is your research placed in and among this scope of research?
What topics will it address?
What is your research question?
What are your sources of data collection going to be?
Who will be your target audience?
What are your limitations on time, place, budget, etc.?
Your diagram could be a list, bullet points, flow chart, table, hand drawn or you can use any medium you’re comfortable (include the picture in the paper your submit).
Step 3: In no more than 250 words explain your diagram in a scientific manner. Remember, it does not include YOU. It is not about your opinions or feelings. Rather, it is about your understanding and arranging what is in the general topic, its background, and where within this organisation you are focusing. Remember, this is still tentative. In-depth analysis is not required.
Using the references from step 1 you may want to plan to:
repeat existing research in a different context, or
use a different methodology to correlate the research, or
organise the research of others in a coherent and unique manner
Your submission will consist of 3 pages. The first page is the diagram (or a picture of it if you drew it by hand or other tools). The second page is the written explanation of the diagram. The last page is the list of references formatted according to LBU requirements. Don’t forget to write your name at the top of the first page as usual and save the document including your full name.
