OBJECTIVE(S)
This assessment item relates to the unit learning outcomes as in the unit descriptor. This
assessment the following LOs:
LO1: Explain the theory and strategies for maintaining professional relationships with different
stakeholder groups and identify the range of issues in IT code of practice.
LO2: Interpret and critically reflect on the Australian Computer Society Code of Ethics.
LO3: Analyse key principles and practices related to workplace and occupational health and
safety in the IT industry.
LO4: Critically evaluate the various contemporary IT issues including software copyright and
licensing
TOPICS
Students will write an assignment on only one of the following topics of their choice:-
• Using a highly publicized case of whistle-blowing (such as the Enron accounting scandal
and the whistle-blower Sherron Watkins), demonstrate the steps the whistle-blower
took to resolve the situation.
• Write an essay outlining the pros and cons of providing cheap laptops to students in
underperforming, poor school districts.
• Develop a competitive intelligence gathering policy that specifies what an ethical
intelligence gathering strategy is, and what is unethical.
• Write an essay about the history and benefits of the Open Source movement.
• Write an essay about the advantages and disadvantages of the practice of crosslicensing, including the repercussions for smaller business
• Write an essay discussing the pros and cons of hiring known hackers to test the security
of a system.

• Design a security education program for employees.
• Design a computer usage policy for an IT company.
• Design an IT use policy for a software company that develops banner ads for asearch
engine, tailored to the subject for which the user is searching. Keep in mind that the
employees of such a company would need unlimited access to the Web.
• Design an ethics training program for low-level employees, and describe what changes
(if any) should be made to the same program in order to target middle management.
• Write an essay discussing the ethics, risks, and benefits of using cookies and spyware to
track customer browsing and online purchasing habits.
GUIDELINES
This assignment is a group assignment of 3 to 5 members per group.
Research papers must be typed, or word processed, and referenced as per VIT guidelines. A
variety of references from textbooks, journal articles and the internet would be well regarded.
There should be headings, an introduction (not more than 10% of the total) and a conclusion
(not more than 10% of the total).
Assessment Criteria
1. Research Assignment/Research Report : 1000 – 1500 words (penalties may be applied
for word counts +/- 10%)
2. To be submitted on or before the due date on MOODLE. Penalty for late submission is
10% of the paper’s worth deducted for each day late.
Marking Criteria (from 40%)
3% (front page, illustrations, colour, headings)
4% (should explain the rationale and give an overview)
20% (quality, relevance and conciseness of discussion/facts)
10% (what I have learnt and its relevance to my profession)

Referencing Guide
A guide to referencing sources used in assignments
• All sources used in assignments, essays, reports and theses must be acknowledged in the
text of your document giving the author’s name followed by the publication date (these are
called ‘in-text citations’)
• A ‘bibliography’ or ‘reference list’ at the end of your document contains the full details of all
the in-text citations, arranged alphabetically
• Referencing is necessary to avoid plagiarism, to verify quotations, and to enable readersto
identify and consult any item to follow-up a cited author’s arguments
