An organisation’s mission and business plan describe the overall purpose of the business. An
operational plan is ‘how to’ plan for achieving the business goals. The operational plan then
provides specific guidance on the strategies, budgets, responsibilities, timeframe, resources, and
the steps necessary to achieve the organisation’s mission and business objectives.
Detailed Operational Plan – Canterbury Renovations
The operational plan contains short descriptive accounts of various operational
strategies/activities that need to be undertaken within the organization to achieve the
targets outlined in the business plan.
Operational plan must outline:

3 Strategies [actions/activities need to be done to achieve the stated operational plan)
• Performance criteria [how you intend to achieve your operational plan, explain the
individual activities as precisely as you can]
• Timeframes for implementation [how long it will take to complete the required
actions]
• Budget required to implement strategies [cost of the required actions]
• Responsibilities for each strategy/action [who is/are the responsible person for
planning and carrying out the duties. Assign the accountability for each action so
everyone knows what you expect from them]
• Resources required to implement strategies [what resources does the organisation
/department require to complete the action? For instance, human resources; staff,
physical resources; machinery, property or stock requirements and requisition]
3. Policies and Procedures
General description –
All organizations need to comply with relevant legislation and regulations. Policies and
procedures provide essential support for the operational systems and processes of an
organisation. Policies inform employees of the overall aims of the organisation, such as
ensuring quality, consistency, fairness, or legal compliance, with particular aspects of
operations. Procedures support policy by providing employees with specific guidance on how to
implement policy and perform particular functions.
3.1 Recruitment policy and procedures [how do you intend to obtain your required staff?
-Position description, selection process, induction procedures, advertisement, etc]
3.2 Induction strategy- Staff development [Are there any training program you’ll be
providing at introduction? -Training in job roles, training in product/service/manufacturing, etc]
3.3 Resource policy [How often do you intend to hold a performance review? What internal
processes will you implement to regularly check that the current skills of staff members are still
appropriate for the business?]
3.4 Asset purchasing strategy [Setting objectives for purchasing materials from external
suppliers, Price comparison, Product/Materials quality, Warranty, Payment methods and terms,
etc]
3.5 Intellectual property strategy [How do you plan to protect your innovations? -Trade
marks, patents, designs, technology, computer systems, software, etc]
ASSESSMENT TASK 2 – Role play
Now you are required to implement your operational plan from Assessment 1. You need to
submit a meeting plan/meeting agenda for your operational plan where you explain and
discuss the operational plan in detail. You also have to allocate responsibilities for at least
2 different strategies outlined within the plan.

To ensure activities outlined in the operational plan are achieved, you should actively consult
with the team members about:
• The activities outlined in the operational plan
• How the outcomes of this activities will be measured

• Who should be responsible for meeting each objective?

ASSESSMENT TASK 3
Monitoring and reviewing the operational plan. Consider your operational plan developed
in Assessment 1 and determine the effectiveness of each strategy. You need to assess the
profitability and productivity outcomes of each strategy. Then outline the areas of
UNDERPERFORMANCE and include an amended version of your operational plan, with
the changes highlighted. You also need to complete the implementation plan.
3.1 Effectiveness of the implemented 3 strategies [You can use the ‘Gap analysis’ approach,
first you identify where it is you want to be, then you identify where it is you are, and the ‘gap’
is where the improvements need to be made.]

3.2 Review the financial outcome- Profitability and productivity outcomes of each strategy
[were your 3 strategies profitable and productive?]
3.3 Identify areas of underperformance [After reviewing your strategies identify at least one
which has not been successful. You may provide excuses such as outcome was over the budget,
the staff were not reliable, inadequate training, vendor supply issues, late delivery of purchased
resources, short timeframe etc]
3.4 Updated/amended operational plan [After the underperformed strategy has been
identified, come up with a ‘contingency plan’ for rectifying under-performance strategy.
Identify improvements that are appropriate to ensure the viability of the operational plan.
Highlight the changes and describe in detail how the changes will be implemented]
