68Excel Lesson 3: Part 4 (Using the ‘Recommended Charts’ Tool)
Please Note: This session builds on, and assumes that you have completed, the previous Excel sessions. If that is not the case, please go back and complete them before returning to this session.
STEP 1: Getting Started
Launch Excel and create a new blank Workbook or open up an existing Workbook. We will use the familiar Car example:
STEP 2: Why use the ‘Recommended Charts’ Tool?
As we have seen in previous sessions, there is a wide range of charts available within Excel to graphically display your data. Sometimes, it is not obvious which chart to use or even if some charts can be used with your chosen data set. Some charts are just not suitable. This is where the ‘Recommended Charts’ tool comes in because, rather than leave the decision to you, it can analyze your data selection and suggest suitable types of chart for you. This session will thus focus on how best to apply this tool.
STEP 3: Select your Data & Locate the Tool
As usual, we begin by selecting some data to work with. You can see the tool here:
STEP 4: Launch the ‘Recommended Charts’ Tool
Click the tool icon and you will see the following box where you can select a suggested type of chart:
Pre-view the Chart
Scroll down for more.
STEP 5: Select a Chart
We will select the first option – a basic Bar Chart (which I have re-titled)
You can then repeat this chart-selection process at will. I shall create a Map Chart next:
Click ‘OK’ and it will be generated.
Below is a screenshot showing all five suggested charts:
I have re-titled, re-sized and moved the charts around.
That completes this session.
Now your turn…
Practice Tasks
Launch Excel
Either create a new blank Workbook or open up an existing one.
